NUMBER ONES 1965

 

The Beatles started the year at the top of both charts with “I Feel Fine” which was the first of their five number ones in the U.S. that year. All written by Lennon & McCartney the others were “Yesterday”, “Eight Days A Week”, “Help!”, which reached the top in Britain. as did “Ticket To Ride”.

In the U.K. the Beatles had the final number one of the year with “Day Tripper/We Can Work it Out”.

 

The Four Tops hit the top with “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey bunch)” written by Holland, Dozier and Holland who also wrote all four of the Supremes U.S. number ones of 1965. They were “Come See About Me”, “Stop! In The Name Of Love”, “Back In My Arms Again” and “I Hear A Symphony”.

 

The Jagger & Richard’s compositions “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” and “Get off My Cloud” were top in both the U.S. and U.K. for the Rolling Stones. They also had “The Last Time” at the top in the U.K. in March.

 

Other singles that reached the top in both charts that year were the hippie anthem “I Got You Babe” by Sonny & Cher written by Sonny Bono, the Righteous Brothers “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling” and the Bob Dylan composition “Mr. Tambourine Man” recorded by the Byrds. They also hit number one in America in 1965 with “Turn! Turn! Turn!”.

 

Petula Clark was the first British female artist in over a decade to reach number one in the U.S. with the song written by Tony Hatch “Downtown”.

 

The Dave Clark Five finished at the top of the charts that year in the U.S. with the song written by Robert Byrd “Over and Over”.

 

In the U.K. Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames took over from the Beatles “I Feel Fine” with “Yeh Yeh” followed at the end of January by  the Larry Banks & Milton Bennett composition “Go Now” recorded by the Moody Blues.

 

The Australian group the Seekers had two number one singles in 1965 written by Tom Springfield they were “I’ll Never Find Another You” and the “Carnival Is Over”.

They had a string of hits and were fronted by the excellent Judith Durham.

 

In June Elvis returned to the top in the U.K. with the Artie Glenn composition “Crying In The Chapel”.

 

The Hollies reached number one in the U.K. In 1965 with “I’m Alive” written by Clint Ballard Jr. he also wrote “The Game Of Love” which was a number one in the U.S. in April of that year for Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders.

 

The Walker Brothers took the Bacharach & David song to the top in September with “Make It Easy On Yourself”.
