January

Carl Wilson of the Beach Boys was indicted for draft evasion

An earthquake in Sicily killed 231 people.

Albert DeSalvo (The Boston Strangler) was sentenced to life in prison

The US performed a nuclear test at the Nevada Test centre.

Fire during a launch pad test aboard the Apollo 1 killed astronauts Virgil Grissom, Edward White  and Roger Chaffee.

February

The American Basketball Association announced it's formation.

The last person to be executed in Australia Ronald Ryan, was hanged at Pentridge Prison, Melbourne.

US launched the Lunar Orbiter 3

Dominica gained independence from England

March

Stalin's daughter, Svetlana Allilueva defected to the West

Oil tanker Torrey Canyon hit a rock at Seven Stones reef near Cornwall which caused a serious oil spill.

Muhammad Ali knocked out Zora Folley in seven rounds to retain his heavyweight boxing title.

Russia performed a nuclear test at Eastern Kazakh – Semipalitinsk, USSR.

April

Applications Technology Satellite ATS II was launched but failed to reach orbit.

Premier Georges Pompidou formed the new French government.

The first Boeing 737 made it's maiden flight.

The U.S launched the unmanned Surveyor 3 which landed on the Moon.

May

Elvis Presley & Priscilla Beaulieu were married in Las Vegas

Lunar 4 was launched by US and began orbiting the Moon.

Glasgow Celtic beat Inter Milan 2-1 in the European Cup held in Lisbon. Orbiter

June

The Stockport Air Disaster: Returning from Spain a Canadair C-4 Argonaut crashed at Hopes Carr, Stockport, killing 72 passengers and crew.

The 6 day war between Israel and their Arab neighbours ( Syria, Jordan, Iraq & Egypt) began.  

China exploded their hydrogen bomb and became the world's 4th thermonuclear power.

July

BBC 2 broadcast the first British colour TV programme.

John Newcombe beat Willie Bungert (6-3 6-1 6-1) at the 81st Wimbledon Mens Tennis final.  

Race riots broke out across America many died and were injured.

Engaged in the Vietnam war a fire aboard the carrier USS Forrestal in Gulf of Tonkin killed 134.

August

The second Blackwall Tunnel opened in Greenwich, London.

A Tanker Lorry containing Liquid gas exploded in Martelange Belgium killing 22 people.

U.K. Pirate Radio Stations began closing down.

Brian Epstein died of drug overdose.

September

Hurricane Beuleah struck the Caribbean, Mexico and Texas. There were hundreds of fatalities.

Radio 1 began broadcasting in the U.K.

The British liner Queen Elizabeth II was launched at Clydebank Scotland

October

The musical "Hair" premiered on Broadway

The U.S Mariner 5 made a fly-by of  Venus

Yoko Plus Me art exhibition opened in London.

German born Hans A Bethe was awarded the Nobel prize for physics.

November

In the United Kingdom a train derailed at Hither Green killing 49 people.

The US launched Surveyor 6 which made a successful soft landing on the Moon.

British government prime minister Harold Wilson devalued the  pound.

December

South African surgeon Christiaan Barnard performed the first heart transplant surgery on 53-year-old Lewis Washkansky.

The Beatles clothing store "Apple" at 94 Baker Street, London, opened. It closed in July 1968.

The Silver Bay Road Bridge collapsed during the rush-hour resulting in the deaths of 46 people.
