Creedence Clearwater Revival's 1968 debut Album

Creedence Clearwater Revival (often known as just CCR) were a Californian band who were said to play a form of southern rock called 'swamp rock'. Led by John Fogerty, they had an incredible run of hits at their peak, scoring nine Top 10 hits between 1969 and 1971. "Creedence Clearwater Revival" opens with a powerful rendition of Screamin' Jay Hawkins' "I Put A Spell On You", followed by the John Fogerty original "The Working Man", and a tough eight-minute take on Dale Hawkins' "Suzie Q".  Ninety-Nine And A Half, Get Down Woman and a then there's the band's first single "Porterville".

Bayou Country

Released in early 1969, the second album by guitarist/vocalist John Fogerty's Californian quartet is perhaps the definitive example of the group's swampy brew of rock, R&B, and blues. The key song on BAYOU COUNTRY is "Proud Mary", a rock milestone that still sounds just as fresh and exciting as it did when it first boomed out of AM radios decades ago. Although Creedence indulges in a few extended jams on tracks like"Keep On Chooglin" and "Graveyard Train", they forsake the gratuitous soloing favored by many of their San Francisco contemporaries in favor of fleshing out rhythmic, rock-solid grooves. From Fogerty's formidable bluesman's growl on "Born On The Bayou" to the explosive version of Little Richard's "Good Golly Miss Molly", BAYOU COUNTRY is what rootsy rock & roll is all about, and it's one of the best American rock albums of the '60s.

Green River

Creedence Clearwater Revival were part of a second wave of San Francisco groups, but unlike their geographical contemporaries, the quartet offered a disciplined music, indebted to'50s rock & roll and southern "swamp" styles. Leader, singer and songwriter John Fogerty possesses one of rock's most distinctive voices, his hoarse, urgent intonation matched by his group's mathematically precise drive. GREEN RIVER, their third album, includes two million-selling singles, the bluesy title track and "Bad Moon Rising", both of which encapsulate the Creedence metier. Remaining selections exhibit a similar economy, crammed with punchy hooklines, tight playing, and incisive lyrics, which take inspiration from traditional styles but in the process create something unique.

Willy and the Poor Boys

The Band that Fogerty Built was truly an American phenomenon during their relatively short recording career. Each of their albums, beginning with 1969's Bayou Country, was a Top 40 hit-making machine. Willy & the Poor Boys produced two smashes--"Down on the Corner" (which is about the fictional black street group that gave the album its title) and "Fortunate Son," Fogerty's most ferocious political rant. Each LP was a concept collection of sorts, and this one was a tribute to the South, featuring two traditional standards popularized by Leadbelly as well as two instrumentals that made you swear CCR were from New Orleans rather than Oakland, California. --Bill Holdship

Chronicle, Vol. 1:

Few bands of the 1960s retained as much a sense of the roots of rock and roll as did Creedence Clearwater Revival. Their music is rife with country, rockabilly, and R&B influences, a combination that produced several hit singles--most of which are present on this collection. These include "I Heard It through the Grapevine," "Lodi," "Up Around the Bend" , " "Who'll Stop the Rain," and of course "Bad Moon Rising." This is an excellent greatest-hits collection, and a perfect introduction to the music of a band that has been enduringly influential. --Genevieve Williams

Book - Bad Moon Rising: The Unauthorized History of Creedence Clearwater Revival

Bad Moon Rising:

Rightly called the saddest story in rock 'n' roll history, this Creedence biography—newly updated with stories from band members, producers, business associates, close friends, and families—recounts the tragic and triumphant tale of one of America’s most beloved bands. Hailed as the great American rock band from 1968 to 1971, Creedence Clearwater Revival captured the imaginations of a generation with classic hits like “Proud Mary,” “Down on the Corner,” “Green River,” “Born on the Bayou,” and “Who’ll Stop the Rain.” Mounting tensions among bandmates over vibrant guitarist and lead vocalist John Fogerty’s creative control led to the band's demise. Tracing the lives of four musicians who redefined an American roots-rock sound with unequaled passion and power, this music biography exposes the bitter end and abandoned talent of a band left crippled by debt and dissension.
